a quick update

I have just returned home from an eight-month stay as an English Language assistant in Oyonnax, in France. It is a small town with about 20,000 inhabitants, capital of the "Plastics Valley". It's very industrial and as ugly as hell, but it grows on you. Well, it grew on me at least. I made some great friends and had a ball whilst I was there, and I'm now "home sweet home". Although it no longer feels like home. France is my home now.

10 reasons I know I'm not in Oyonnax anymore

1. The sun is shining, it's more than 20 degrees outside and it seems like nobody is wearing any clothes anymore and car roofs are down.
2. People actually stop to let you cross the road.
3. I look the wrong way to cross the road.
4. People passing by are talking in English.
5. I don't see people I know everywhere.
6. I don't get woken up by a gate, school children and a bell.
7. I have a double bed.
8. There are more than 3 clothes shops.
9. There haven't been 5 fires today.
10. The internet works!

I just want to quickly say, the return journey was a bit of a nightmare (this is becoming somewhat of a habit). I arrived as the check in was closing to dump my suitcase, only to be told that the flight was overbooked and I wouldn't be returning to my roots today. (This was two days ago edit: apparently not, only yesterday!). Luckily (and this is a lesson for all), I checked in online, thus eliminating said problem and I jumped on the plane for the short journey home.

So anyway, a quick introduction to my new blog. In one weeks time I will be returning to France and beginning a whole new adventure. This is the plan:
  • Drive from Geneva to Montpellier, a drive which I will take four days to do (deliberately). Stopping off along the way (any ideas where? I'm thinking ChambĂ©ry, Valence and Nimes as sleeping points, to be confirmed.)
  • Spending four days in Montpellier, applying for my Masters (translation, for those who are interested), looking for a place to live, and in general doing a bit of a recce!
  • Heading over to the other side of the South of France (Provence) and stopping off for one night in Aix-en-Provence to be an au pair with a lovely family in gorgeous surroundings for three ish months. Here's hoping I will have internet access...
